Siemens Mobility is pleased to announce that it is partnering with ASFiNAG, the operating authority for the Austrian highway network, to provide the technology for an intelligent traffic management system that facilitates the exchange of safety information between vehicles and the road. The “Cooperative Intelligent Transport System” (C-ITS) is a next generation traffic management system that uses broadcast technology to analyze roadway conditions and disseminates information to motorists relating to traffic jams, accidents, and lane closures. ASFiNAG is the first infrastructure provider in Europe to reach the milestone of installing a network connecting the vehicle and road. The process of implementing the system across 2,200 kilometers of highway and expressway in Austria has already started.

AUSTRIA, 2020-10: ASFINAG connects roads with vehicles on a large scale in Europe

Südeinfahrt Wien C2X

Starting from November 2020 onwards, Austrian motorways will be fitted with dedicated short-range communication equipment to enable a direct exchange of safety-relevant information between the road infrastructure and vehicles. Through a procurement of V2X roadside units, the Austrian motorway operator ASFINAG has taken an important step to enable the dialogue between road infrastructure operators and road users. V2X stands for Vehicle-to-everything communication and includes co-operative, safety-related communication among vehicles and infrastructure. ASFINAG will start the deployment on selected sections and expand it to the overall Austrian motorway network within the next few years.

16. September 2020: Interim report on evaluation of Use Cases Talking Traffic

News 1015300 1920

The PartnershipTalking Traffic is a collaboration between the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, 60 regional and local authorities and national and international private companies.
These partners are working together to accelerate development and deployment with regard to retrieving and organising traffic light data (cluster 1), to process, enrich and distribution of a wide variety of data and convert this into real-time and made-to-measure data sets and information (cluster 2) and to provide this information to a wide variety of road users (cluster 3) though their smart phones, PNDs and in-car systems. This joint co-investment program seeks to enhance the availability of intelligent data for a wide group of road users (cars, trucks, public transport, emergency services, cyclists). This way, the safety and sustainability of traffic and transport can be enhanced resulting in the reduction of travel times and, eventually, lower public expenditure.
Mixing global and local players in this Partnership speeds up development and deployment of new driver assistance services and lays the ground work for the next levels in connected and automated driving while delivering new services from the beginning of 2018 onwards.

27 May 2020: Project "Inframix" finished

Inframix

Inframix is about hybrid traffic: Automated vehicles and ‚analogue‘ ones will co-exist on Europe’s road for a foreseeable amount of time and road operators will need to find ways to manage traffic of automated and non-automated vehicles and make traffic flow. Inframix is about hybrid communication: how to make different types of communication work together and co-exist.

The report Inframix published on the demonstrations is clear: ITS-G5 works, it’s interoperable and performed without any problems. The concept for regular LTE communication requires further work.

Projects like Inframix are important, since they offer an independent insight into how technologies perform and offer stakeholders to compare what is available on the market. Considering the immense amount of expectation that industry is building up around automated driving and connectivity technologies a neutral check is essential.

Another major outcome of the project is the successful testing of the after next "Day 2"-C-ITS-Services. This generation of C-ITS messages is already thinking about driving behavior and traffic management for a time when a large number of vehicles will be able to use such additional services. Some of these vehicles will even be fully autonomous by then.

18 March 2020: Competitive advantage through C-ITS!

News 1027876 1920

EuroNCAP is to the automotive industry, what the Academy is to film industry. EuroNCAP rates the safety of vehicles. It’s an independent body composed of government bodies, automotive clubs, insurance industry and research institutes, which gives it a unique role and authority protecting consumer interest.

EuroNCAP has awarded a hazard warning connectivity application based on the European C-ITS standard ITS-G5 for road safety. This underlines the maturity of the technology and the award of five stars for road safety is an important aspect for customers when choosing a vehicle and gives car manufacturers a competitive advantage.
